What Is USANA?
The USANA story starts when Dr. Myron Wentz loses his father to a heart attack at the age of 17 and his mother to breast cancer while working at his Gull Laboratories which he founded in 1974. Dr. Wentz dreamt of a world free from pain and suffering and when he started seeing his own health declining. He began his search for a nutritional product which resulted in the conclusion that a scientifically-based, effective formulation wasn’t obtainable on the market. As a result of his ongoing research in the field of microbiology with speciality in immunology Dr. Wentz already received a Ph.D. from the University of Utah. In 2007 Wentz has even been rewarded with the Albert Einstein prize for his contribution to life sciences.
Because of his belief in the power of direct sales Dr. Wentz launched USANA in 1992 as a network company. Just like many other big network companies USANA resides in Salt Lake City, Utah, and already achieved big praise from various magazines, events, guides, sports teams, ext. from all over the world. At this moment USANA employs over 900 people throughout the world and reached a sales number of approximately $429 million for the year 2008. USANA is operating in fourteen markets: the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Mexico. USANA is specialized in hair care, health and fitness, personal hygiene and weight management products. Their products are worldwide known as top quality and have been praised by athletes from all around the world who made the nutritional products a part of their health and well being regime.
When you join the USANA business as a distributor you’ll receive a distributor kit (price: $29.95) and some additional tools so you can start marketing your business. Like all wellness mlm opportunities this is a low cost and the only risk you take is the risk to improve your health dramatically. I won’t complain about the products, they are of an excellent quality and scientifically backed up for more than 17 years now. But on the business side USANA doesn’t really has much to offer. Just like some other mlm companies founded in the ‘90’s USANA started using a, for that time revolutionary, binary compensation plan. For people who are not familiar with the binary system… allow me to explain this as simple as I possibly can.
The USANA Compensation Plan
A binary plan requires the distributor to maintain two legs in his downline in order to earn commissions. When recruiting a new distributor he could be placed in your left or in your right “leg”. If he’s part of your left “leg” all the people he brings into your organization will also be placed in the left “leg”. The left “leg” could be producing thousands in volume, but as long as your right “leg” doesn’t produce enough volume, there’s a possibility that you will lose a lot of commission. If the right “leg” only produces, let’s say, 500 while your left, more successful “leg”, produces 20 000 points in volume your commission will be based on your lowest “leg” in volume, the right one (of 500). The rest of the money goes to the company or as bonuses to distributors who are placed higher on the food chain.
USANA Conclusion:
From a product perspective when choosing the USANA opportunity, you will be marketing top notch quality nutritional products backed up by many years of scientific research into cell nutrition. The company has been around for ages now and has been able to brand itself as a stable business with a good reputation and strong leadership. If you are a fan of binary plans, you will also find the compensation plan attractive. What will be important to keep in mind while marketing such world-known products is the fact that there’s a big possibility of a saturated market. There’s even a big chance that half of your city already knows about the USANA products, maybe even used them once or is still using. If we were mid 90’s and you were considering to join USANA, I would say “go for it”, maybe you will be able to retire when the new millennium starts… but as for today, I’m having serious doubts about the business opportunity. A good product is one thing… but without a serious strategic plan that stands out I would dissuade a newbie to join USANA, unless he’s able to work with a renowned leader.
